"We were curious to see the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy's purchase at Green Point Dunes, south of Elberta, so we decided to walk the six mile stretch to Arcadia. It is surely one of the most pristine beaches in the world, broad and clean, with elaborate back dunes blending into forests. That it has been saved from development is one of the conservancy's greatest achievements."
--Jerry Dennis, from the June 2006 Traverse Magazine article, "The Greatest Walkabout"

Did you know you can snorkle out to the rest of the ship? Updated September 2007 with a newsaper woodcut from 1886 and photos of the what appears to be the Marinette's sister ship, the Menekaunee

  • The rise and fall of Watervale as a sawmill town

Botulism is Killing Great Lakes Birds
Some 8,000 died in 2007, including 2,000 loons. Scientists say they think the botulism, which is native to the Great Lakes, comes to life in rotting cladophora algae and is absorbed by invasive zebra and quagga mussels that have taken over the lake bottom. Gobies eat the toxic mussels, and the birds eat the gobies. Click Here to read the article from the Detroit Free Press
